Since the introduction of electronic technology, digital technology, and advanced manufacturing technology in the field of dentistry, digitization in diagnosis and treatment has become a major trend in prosthodontics specialty. Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) have become an increasingly popular part of dentistry over the past 25 years. Restorations which are being produced through CAD/CAM systems are more esthetically pleasing and faster in fabrication as compared to the conventional restorations. CAD/CAM systems are typically composed of three parts; a data acquisition unit to take an optical impression, a software for virtual designing and a computerized milling device for manufacturing the restoration. The first two parts of the system play roles in the CAD phase, while the third is responsible for the CAM phase.
