يستخدم التجويف الفموي لسنوات عديدة كموضع لإيصال العقار في الجسم لما له من مزايا عديدة منها السهولة الشديدة في تناول العقار مما يساعد على إمتثال المريض في العلاج وكذكلك قابليتة لتجنيب العقار من المرور في الإيض الأول . إلى جانب هذا فإن التجويف الفموي يستخدم كثيرا لتحقيق التأثير الموضوعي لكثير من الأدوية على أغشية الفم ، ومن هنا كانت تناول العقار عن طيرق التجويف الفموي - لما له من مزايا - يشكل العديد من التحديات لدى الباحثين .
