his study was designated to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic irrigation or XP-Endo Finisher on postoperative pain in endodontic retreatment patient. 78 patients were selected randomly which need endodontic retreatment and they are divided into 3 groups according to the method of irrigation activation after root canal preparation with protaper Next. Group (A): irrigation activation was done using ultrasonic device (Ultra X) Group (B): irrigation activation was done by XP-Endo Finisher Group (C): irrigation by Navi-tip –side vented needle of 31-gauge, 27mm Each group received the root canal retreatment in a single visit. Pain was evaluated at time intervals of 6-12-24-72 hours and 7 days by the help of visual analogue scale (VAS). The results of the study were: At the first day (6-12-24 hours) there was a significant difference between the groups in pain incidence and intensity where group C showed more pain scores than group A and group B. At (48-72 hours and 7 days) there were no significant difference between the groups where pain scores declined among the groups till it reaches nearly score (0) at day 7. The number of analgesics taken by the patients were higher at the first 48 hours among all groups. Patient at group C recorded the highest number of analgesics and antibiotic intake at the first 24 hours. At (48-72 hours and 7 days) there were no significant difference between the groups where the number of analgesics intake decrease.
