Parenting styles nowadays have been presented with extreme interest. It was believed that parenting style exerts an extremely significant influence on how a child behaves, copes with stresses and stimuli including those encountered in the dental office, and also the development of their child’s present and future emotional health. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry in Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine, Future University in Egypt, during the period from March 2021 to May 2021, the study aimed to correlate parenting style with their children’s behavior, dental anxiety and dental caries during the first dental visit. The data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire included 32 items divided into three categories regarding different parent reactions to child behavior, the first category for authoritative parents, the second category for authoritarian parents and the third category for permissive parents. Thirty-two questions included demographic data and PSDQ were distributed among the children with their parents included in the study sample by one single researcher, master degree student in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health in Faculty of oral and dental medicine, Future University In Egypt, who was given a description of the study to the parents before starting to ask the questions then, if inclusion criteria were confirmed and parents agreed to participate, the researcher asks the parent about the demographic information, PSDQ and measure the child behavior rating scale (Frankl scale). Out of 105 cases, 61(58.1%) were boys and 44(41.9%) were girls. 32(30.5%) of the studied cases ranked first in birth, 36(34.3%) ranked second, 25(23.8%) ranked third while 12(11.4%) ranked fourth or more. The mean value for dmf score was (3.43±1.61) and for the Frankl scale it was (2.96±0.91). 35 cases were represented for each parenting style. In the first dental visit, the values of dmf scores for the permissive parenting style were found (4.08±1.61) while in authoritarian parenting stye were (3.94±1.20) and the authoritative style was (2.26±1.31). Besides, the scores of child fear with the permissive parenting style were found (3.50±0.61) while in the authoritarian were (3.35±0.49) and scores with the authoritative style were (2.03±0.75). The results in the present study had shown that parenting style influences a child’s dental caries, the highest dmf scores were found with the permissive parenting while the lowest scores were found with the authoritative style. Also, child’s behavior toward dental treatment varies according to different parenting styles. The highest score of child fear was associated with the permissive parenting style while the lowest scores were found with the authoritative style.
