This study was directed to evaluate the effect of different irrigation activation techniques in single-visit endodontic treatment on postoperative pain in patients with mandibular first premolar teeth needs root canal retreatment
Seventy eight patients which needed endodontic retreatment in lower first premolars with underextended root canal filling were selected randomly.
After removal of the root canal filling with protaper retreatment system. The root canal preparation with protaper Next was done in crown-down technique according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The root canal continued to shaped with X3 (30/07) master apical file in which K-file #25 was loose at length.
During instrumentation the root canals were thoroughly irrigated with 2 ml of freshly prepared 2.6% sodium hypochlorite (Naocl) solution for 1 minute dispensed through plastic disposable syringe with side vented needle (gauge 30), between every subsequent instrument. Then they were divided into 3 groups according to the method of irrigation activation:
Group (A): Irrigation by Navi-tip –side vented needle of 31-gauge, 27mm.
Group (B): Irrigation activation was done by ultrasonic device (EndoUltra)
Group (C): irrigation activation was done using sonic device (EDDY)
Each group received the root canal retreatment in a single visit. Pain was evaluated at time intervals of 6-12-24-72 hours by the help of visual analogue scale (VAS).
The results of the study were:
At the first day (6-12-24 hours) there was no significant difference between the groups in pain incidence and intensity but group A (control group) showed more pain scores than group C (Eddy group) followed by group B (Endoultra group).
At (48,72 hours) there were no difference between the groups where pain scores declined among the groups till it reaches score (0).
The incidence and number of analgesics taken by the patients were higher in group A (control group) followed by group C (Eddy group) then B (Endoultra group).with no significant difference among all groups.
