| 520 | 3 | _aColon-targeted drug delivery has been the focus of numerous studies due to its potential to improve treatment of local diseases affecting the colon, while minimizing systemic drug side effects. Some examples of the diseases which impact the colon include Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). In literature, different strategies have been used to target the inflamed colon after oral drug administration. Strategies for specific colon drug delivery include the utilization of pro-drugs, exploitation of higher colonic pH values, and enzymatic activity of colonic micro flora, intestinal transit time and colonic pressure. In general, dimensions of the delivery system greatly influence the targeting of the inflamed colon. Size-dependency of particles has a considerable impact on their epithelial uptake. A favoured accumulation in the inflamed colon tissues has been found for particles having sizes in the nanometer-range. It has been shown in experimental colitis models that nanosized particles are more readily uptaken by cells that are immune-related such as macrophages or dendritic cells in the site of active inflammation. The nano spray drying is one of the advanced technologies to produce nanoparticles. The nano spray dryer can produce relatively high yield of nanosized particles which possess narrow particle size distributions. | |
