520 _aMaxillary hypoplasia is a common finding in patients with repaired orofacial cleft. Management of this condition is challenging for the reconstructive surgeon. Traditional surgical orthodontic approaches to treat these patients often fall short of expectations with respect to facial balance and aesthetics. Recently, distraction osteogenesis has been proposed as an alternative and effective method of skeletal reconstruction
520 _aEleven patients presented with maxillary hypoplasia with unilateral or bilateral cleft lip and palate, were the subjects of this study. Their ages ranged from 10 to 16 years and four of these, patients were males and seven females. According to the severity of maxillary hypoplasia, the cases were divided into two groups [moderate hypoplasia (=< 6 mm) and severe hypoplasia (> 6 mm)].
